Being born into a family avidly enjoying the outdoors, the importance of protecting our great countries natural resources was instilled in me since a young age. The countless camping and fishing trips across the Southwest were a catalyst for my curiosity turned obsession of the natural world. The exposure to so many different habitat types and ecosystems early on allowed me to get a glimpse into the big picture that is our natural resource land and heritage.

While attaining my degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management, with a minor in Conservation Biology from West Virginia University, I was fortunate enough to land an internship with the West Virginia DNR. If declaring my major as a result of my intrigue with the natural world was dipping my toe in the world of conservation, then my internship was taking the full plunge into the beautiful art that is land management. Witnessing daily the ecological benefit of a landscape representing its full swath of native flora and fauna was fascinating. I was quick to learn that Mother Nature is kind to those who take pride in her well-being.

After graduation, I found myself working as a ranch hand and hunting guide at an intensely managed ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. Working on a property where every management decision made was based solely on the well-being of our deer herd was an eye opener. I not only grasped the importance of nutrition and a well-balanced diet, but was blown away by the effects external stressors have on the development of these incredible animals. And what is the best remedy to mitigate these unnecessary stressors? Possessing a diverse and thriving habitat for these creatures to flourish!

Working for state and federal agencies throughout my career has made me hyper-aware of one glaring gap in our nations natural resource management approach. This is, while proper management of our public lands are vitally important, the 61% of the US is privately owned. If we, as landowners, want to make a positive impact on our country’s natural resources, what better place to start then our own backyard?

It is of my most sincere belief that a majority of our nation’s landowners want to do right by the land. As a wildlife biologist and land manager, I feel that the deterioration of the ecological health of our private lands is not a result of lack of eagerness to benefit the landscape, but simply a gap in knowledge on how to do so properly and efficiently. Our decision making and actions today will always have an impact on future generations experiences in the outdoors. Let us work together in an effort to restore our nations natural habitat, acre by acre, so that our grandchildren will be able to live in the “good old days” of outdoor recreation. As I have done with many others, it would be a privilege to work with you on your journey to a better tomorrow.
